May 2010 Observing List

Focused on Coma Berenices and surrounding areas.

NGC 4169
Lenticular Galaxy

Constellation: Coma Berenices    Magnitude: 13.2    Size: 1.7' x 0.9'    RA: 12h12m18s Dec: +29°10'46"
Notes: Brightest of "The Box" galaxy group.

NGC 4302
Edge On
Galaxy

Constellation: Coma Berenices    Magnitude: 12.5    Size: 5.0' x 0.9'    RA: 12h21m42s Dec: +14°35'52"
Notes:
Large, ghostly edge on. It makes a wonderful, tight pair with galaxy NGC 4292.

PN G339.9+88.4
Planetary Nebula

Constellation: Coma Berenices    Magnitude: 12.5    Size: 8.8'    RA: 12h55m33s Dec: +25°53'31"
Notes:
Responds mildly to an OIII filter.

NGC 3799
Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Leo    Magnitude:  14.2    Size: 40" x 25"    RA:  11h40m09s Dec: +15°19'38"
Notes: Makes a tight pair with NGC 3800. Connection between the two is seen with large aperture.

NGC 3666
Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Leo    Magnitude: 12.7    Size: 3.7' x 1.1'    RA: 11h24m26s Dec: +11°20'32"
Notes:
10th magnitude star involved and a near 6th magnitude star in the FOV!

NGC 3662
Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Leo    Magnitude: 13.5     Size: 1.4' x 0.8'    RA: 11h23m46s    Dec: -01°06'17"
Notes:
Surface irregularity is visible in moderate aperture.

NGC 3044
Edge On Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Sextans   Magnitude: 12.4    Size: 4.7' x 0.8'   RA: 09h53m40s Dec: +01°34'47"
Notes: My notes state "As thin as Reese Witherspoon's chin"!

NGC 5297
Edge On Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Canes Venatici   Magnitude: 12.4   Size: 4.6' x 1.0'   RA:  13h46m23s   Dec: +43°52'19"
Notes:
Dust lane noticeable in moderate-large aperture.

NGC 2608
Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Canes Venatici    Magnitude: 10.8    Size: 4.2' x 1.6'    RA:  12h25m49s Dec: +33°32'49"
Notes:
Don't let it's magnitude fool you! It has a very very low surface brightness. Look for it's HII regions.

IC 749
Barred Spiral Galaxy

Constellation: Ursa Major    Magnitude: 12.8    Size: 2.1' x 1.7'    RA: 11h58m34s Dec: +42°44'03"
Notes:
Sits in a small IC galaxy group.
